King Ine of Wessex - a Saxon King - is reputed to have erected a stone church here sometime in the 7th century. This church was added to in the 10th century by the Abbot of Glastonbury, St Dunstan. It was - after the Norman conquest in 1066 - added to and improved by their craftsmen, to become something like we imagine it was like in its' heyday. Glastonbury Abbey was yet another victim of King Henry VIII's 'Dissolution of the Monasteries' in 1536.
