Churches of the World High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Churches and other places of Worship in Bath in the county of Somerset in England, part of the United Kingdom. Somerset, Bath Abbey - East End in June 2009 The Abbey Church of Saints Peter and Paul is commonly known as Bath Abbey. The church is of the Anglican faith, and is formerly a Benedictine Monastery. There has been a religious building on the site since at least the year 757AD, an Anglo-Saxon church at that time. The religious buildings have been ruined on several occasions, beginning with the Normans a little after 1066AD, who built a Norman Cathedral around the year 1090, but because the Monastery could not afford its' upkeep, that too was in ruins by the late 15th century. By 1499AD the existing Abbey was founded, only to be left in ruins in the 1530's by the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries' - care of King Henry VIII. The building was repaired and completed by 1611AD, and their motto is 'Where Earth and Heaven Meet'. Bath Abbey Page II>>>>Somerset Page
