High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Churches and other places of Worship in Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) in the county of Denbighshire (Sir Ddinbych) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom.

Llangollen, Eliseg's Cross (or Pillar)

Valle Crucis (meaning Valley of the Cross) takes its' name from the nearby 'Eliseg's Cross', which was erected sometime in the 9th century to honour Eliseg, the King of Powys, and was therefore in existence about 400 years before the erection of the Abbey that takes its' name. All that now remains of the Cross is a pillar, and the one time inscription is now difficult to see.

The Abbey - which was of the Cistercian Monastic Order - was built in the year 1201 under the patronage of Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor - the Prince of Powys Fadog - who died in 1236 and was laid to rest in the Abbey. Prince Madog was a direct ancestor of Owain Glyndwr, and a cousin to Llywelyn ap Iorweth (Llywelyn the Great).

Like all Cistercian Monasteries it was built in a secluded location, and few places could rival the natural beauty of this peaceful valley, where the monks raised sheep and grew all their own vegetables and fruits.

Valle Crucis Abbey is the best preserved Cistercian Monastery in the United Kingdom, and when I visited in late February 2009 extensive repairs were being carried out to the dormitories etc, and there was no entry to those parts, which expains why I have taken no photos of that best preserved part of the Abey.
