High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Churches and other places of Worship in Llanrwst in the county of Caernarfonshire (now Gwynedd) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom.

Caernarfonshire, Llanrwst, Gwydir Chapel

Gwydir Chapel was commissioned by Sir Richard Wynn of Gwidyr Castle, and built in 1633. He was the treasurer to the wife of King Charles I - Queen Henrietta Maria. The architect is reputed to have been Inigo Jones, who also designed the triple arched Pont Fawr bridge in the town.

The chapel, which was built as an extension of St Grwst's Church, was built as a memorial to the influential Wynn family, but has taken on an even more important role with the addition of two artefacts removed from Maenan Abbey in the Conwy Valley after the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries'; the sarcophagus of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), and an effigy of Howell Coetmore ap Gruffydd Vychan ap Dafyd, the son of David, Prince of Wales. Howell commanded the archers under Edward - the 'Black Prince', at the Battle of Poiters during the 'Hundred Years War'. He was the one who was also responsible for the building of Gwydir Castle, although of course not in its' present form.
