Churches of the World High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Churches and other places of Worship in Llandegai in the county of Caernarfonshire (now Gwynedd) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom. Caernarfonshire, Llandegai, St Tegai's Church c1913 - showing the Pennant burial monument in the foreground A church was founded in this parish as early as the 5th century
by Tegai a Welsh saint. Tegai (or Cai) had come over from Brittany
with Saint Cadvan, to revive the Christian faith in Wales. The present church, in the village of Llandegai was built circa 1330, and has benefited from the patronage of the Pennant family of the nearby Penrhyn Castle. An interesting point is made in that what the English refer to as the Dark Ages is referred to by the Welsh as the Golden Age of Saints, when so many churches were founded in Wales. An alabaster monument rescued from Llanfaes Priory after the ‘dissolution’ is of disputed ownership. The village of Llandegai was built and owned by the super wealthy Pennant family. They had made a fortune initially in the West Indies, and were staunch supporters and protagonists of slavery. They fought strongly against the abolition of slavery. Later, they
added to their fortunes by creating an empire built on the
production
and distribution of slate products. They were responsible for
building Port Penrhyn in Bangor, which facilitaed the distribution
of slate.
