Churches of the World High resolution old and contemporary photographs of St Mary's Church in Betws y Coed in the county of Caernarfonshire (now Gwynedd) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom. Caernarfonshire, Betws-y-Coed, St Mary's Church Side View In the 19th century Betws y Coed had already become a popular holiday destination. The existing small church of St Michael was unable to cope, and thus in 1873 Christ Church was built, and later renamed St Mary's Church. The land on which the church was built was donated by the Gwydir estate, and had previously been used for events as diverse as cock-fighting and open air prayer meetings. A local man - Owen Gethin Jones - was chosen to build the church, and he was also responsible for building many other local buildings including the Railway Station. Apart from containing the clock, the tower contains tubular bells which can be played from a keyboard. St Mary's is one of the largest and grandest of village churches, certainly in North Wales.
