The Anglesey Churches Photomontage - to be raffled to raise funds for the Church in Wales on Anglesey. A photomontage of a selection of Anglesey Churches is to be raffled after the Anglesey Show which is on at the Anglesey Showground on the 11th and 12th August. Raffle tickets will be on sale for just £1 per ticket for this unique real photographic montage of a selection of churches on Anglesey, both present and past. It is printed as one picture (not lots of separate images joined together) on archival photographic paper said to last up to 300 years. Proceeds will be to the Church, under the administration of Reverend Emlyn Williams of Llanfihangel Ysceifiog Church of St Michael. Tickets for the raffle will be available at the Church in Wales tent, where you will be made very welcome. This is doubtless the most complete high resolution photographic record of Anglesey Churches on the internet. and as well as the exteriors I have also photographed many of the interiors, and also the interesting artefacts and tombstones. The island of Anglesey - Ynys Môn - has a greater number of ancient monuments (burial chambers, standing stones etc) than any other place in Europe. Similarly, on Anglesey, there are many churches that stand on the same ground where there has been a religious building or christian cell since the 4th, 5th, and 6th centuries. It is interesting to note that the period in British history that is known to the english as the Dark Ages is known to the welsh as the Golden Age of Saints. In the early days of religion, churches were seldom built of stone, not least because periodically they would be subject to e.g. Viking raids on churches that would plunder and destroy churches. During the mid 19th century there was a lot of money made available to repair, rebuild, or abandon and build new churches - probably in an effort to combat the rise of non-conformism. Some of the most interesting churches are in fact the abandoned ones, and for that reason I will be including them on this website. Click on a place name in either of the colmunns to view high resolution photographs of Anglesey's places of worship. Alternatively, look for a church or chapel using the search box at the top of this page. Anglesey, Rhosmeirch, Ebenezer Chapel - founded in 1749 The above chapel at Rhosmeirch - Ebenezer Chapel - is the first and therefore the oldest chapel on Anglesey, and it is still in regular use. You may select from a place name in the left hand column, or search using the box below - tip: inserting the place name may be the quickest way to find your church.
If you have any pictures of the places of worship of any religion in any country, then please scan your photographs or postcards in at a high resolution, but at least 1280 pixels width, and email them to me here. Not just a photo of the outside of your place of worship, but of the beautiful things inside, and even of the graveyard, and the interesting tombstones. In addition, if you want to tell us about your church, then we will display your story with the photographs of the place of worship, so as every visitor to your page may learn and appreciate what your church is about. |
