Churches of the World High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Churches and other places of Worship in Llantrisant in the county of Anglesey (Sir Fôn) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom. Anglesey, Llantrisant Old Church 1900's This ancient Church was first erected on this site during the 4th century, and is still occasionally used for services to this day, although it is now in the care of the Friends of the Friendless Churches, who occasionally open it to the public - as it was when I photographed it on Sunday the 28th September 2008. Like the new church of Llantrisant (meaning the church of the three saints) the old and original church was dedicated to Saints Afran, Ieuan and Sannan. The font came from the smallest church in Buckinghamshire, St Michael and All Saints at Grove. When that church was made redundant in the 1960's, the font was removed and sent to Llantrisant. Of particular historical interest is the16th century memorial in this church to Hugh Williams of Nantanog. He had a very scholarly son - William - who read law at Jesus College Oxford. William went on to become Recorder of Chester, a city which he would later represent twice in Parliament. Under King Charles II he was Speaker of the House of Commons, and under King James II Solicitor General. As Solicitor General, William headed the prosecution of the seven Bishops, who - on the orders of King James II - had been imprisoned in the Tower of London for seditious libel - they were found not guilty. When William died in 1700 he was buried at Llansilin (was the county of Montgomeryshire - now Powys) near Oswestry. It was from William's marriage to Margaret, a daughter of Sir Watkin Kyffin, that one of his descendants would later build Bodelwyddan Church - what we know now as the 'Mable Church'. Anglesey, Llantrisant, Old Church - amongst a field of resting parishioners I tried to reproduce the photograph from the 1900's, and you may notice how very little has changed between the taking of the two images of Llantrisant Old Church above - even after over 100 years, it as is if they were taken in the same year. It seems that time has stood still - if only in this churchyard.
