Anglesey, Llanllibio, St Llibio's Churchyard and the Church House

In the middle of a small field on Anglesey, there is a stone memorial to this area where once (the welsh inscription reads) the church of St Llibio once stood, including its' cemetery. Research shows that there was a church founded here during the 6th century, which was here continuously until the early 18th century.

This memorial stone was erected by the Reverend Hugh Wynne Jones - rector of the nearby Llantrisant church, of which Llanllibio church was a chapel of ease, in other words, this church was a subsidiary of Llantrisant.

The shape of the Llan (churchyard) may still be seen in this field, and I am in little doubt that there are burials here, although there are no visible graves. A standing stone in the same field may well once have been a corner stone of the church itself, but that remains supposition on my behalf.

The stone contains the following original Welsh memorial; that, and the translated version, are both kindly supplied by Arthur James Huws and Jean:-

"Saf ymdeithydd a sylwa.
Y rhan hon sydd ddaear sanctaidd, sef y fonwent lle safai gynt Eglwys Llanllibio; a lle yr esgynai dros hir oesoedd leisiau gweddi'a mwl at Orsedd y Hef. Dyrcha dithau yn awr uchenaid am fendith Goruchaf arnat.
Aeth yr eglwys yn adfeiliedig tua dechrau C18, a gosododd y Parch Hugh Wynne Jones, periglor Llantrisant, Y carreg hon ar coffadwriaeth yn y flwyddyn 1849".

"Stand ye traveller and take notice
This part of land is holy, namely the cemetery whereby Llanllibio Church once stood; and where over ages past the voices of prayer and promise ascended towards Heaven's Throne. You, now, ascend your sigh for the Supreme's blessing to be bestowed upon you.
The Church became a ruin towards the beginning of the C18, and the Reverend Hugh Wynne Jones, Mass Priest of Llantrisant erected this stone in remembrance in the year 1849."
