During the middle 19th century there was across the whole of Anglesey a good deal of money available to either repair and refurbish, or to rebuild churches, probably in an effort to combat non-conformism

. In the case of the church at Pentre Berw / Gaerwen, as the community had moved closer to the relatively new Telford's A5 road, it was decided to totally rebuild - and a grand job they did as well. The problem morally is that when you abandon a building such as a church, then you are also abandoning the people buried there. Maybe if only through these web pages we are ensuring they are remembered always.

As it happens, the abandoned church, of Llanfihangel Ysceifiog is amongst my most favourite of churches. I have visited lots of churchyards, but have never felt more spiritual and atmosphere than I do there.

On a visit I made to the new church (during which I was graciously entertained) in June 2008, I was told that plans were afoot to restore the original church to its' former glory.
