Anglesey, Llanfihangel Din Sylwy, St Michael's Church - August 2008

Llanfihangel Din Sylwy is so named thus for two reasons. Llanfihangel means the church (and enclosure) of Saint Michael, and Din Sylwy is short for Dinas Sylwy, nearby remains of a Bretonic and later Roman settlement. The settlement is also known as Bwrdd Arthur - literally meaning Arthur's Table.

The church is in a distinctly rural area about 450 feet above sea level - and the sea can be seen from the churchyard. This is one of my favourite churches because of the simplicity of the building itself. In 1833 it was reported to be in a dilapitated state, but was rebuilt in 1855, contemporary with most churches on Anglesey either being refurbished or rebuilt.
